Hope in the Resurrection

More than 2,000 years ago humanity received a Savior named Jesus Christ. He was God manifested in the flesh, sent to Earth on a rescue mission. I remember a Billy Graham preaching when he recounted a childhood memory. He was walking with a family member of his when he looked down and noticed ants moving frantically after their nest had been destroyed. He asked his family member if there was anything they could do to help the ants. It was an innocent request but it puts into perspective God’s love for humanity and his response to the chaos humanity found itself after the fall of men. God’s response was to come down to Earth to rescue fragile men and women from their suffering. He paid the price for our sins and resurrected on the third day. More than 2,000 years later we can still find hope in the resurrection.

He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. – Matthew 28:6

I’ve always thought that the resurrection is where we can find the most comfort and hope in life. Had Jesus not resurrected, where would our hope be? Jesus could have done every miracle He did prior to His death, but had He not resurrected, where would our hope be? If there was no life after death, where would we find hope. Death would have conquered life. But the good news is that Jesus did conquer death. On the third day after His crucifixion, He resurrected from the grave. Death’s party was ended abruptly when that tomb was found empty. This is the good news we share on Easter. God came down from heaven and lived a perfect life in a human body. He was crucified for our sins and resurrected on the third day.

Jesus lives! We serve a living God. Our God isn’t another painted deity that is used as a house decoration or idol. He’s not made by human hands with ears that don’t hear, eyes that don’t see, or a mouth that doesn’t speak. Jesus is much more than this. He is the one and only living God. The Bible says that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was made flesh. Jesus Christ was and is God in the flesh. This is wonderful news for all humanity! It means that God loves us so much that He literally stepped down from His throne to come down to Earth to save what was lost.

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” – Luke 19:10

The Bible says that we’ve all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. It also says that the wages of sin is death. Just like a crime constitutes a punishment, so does sin constitute a punishment. The punishment for sin, however, is much more severe than a punishment on earth. Sin is disobedience to God and equates to a complete separation from Him. Just like oil and water don’t mix, God doesn’t mix Himself with sin. But God is gracious and desires a relationship with His creation. He’s merciful and forgiving. He extends an olive branch to reconcile men to their Creator.

Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, – 2 Corinthians 5:18

Jesus Christ dwelt among us and we beheld His glory. Can you imagine living in Jesus’ time and witnessing God in the flesh? I think it would have been amazing. If we place our faith in Jesus Christ alone, the Bible says that one day we’ll see Him just as He is. It’s going to be amazing! For now, we have to stand firm in our faith. No matter where you find yourself today, remember that there is always hope as long as there is breath in our lungs. Times can be dark and difficult times can bring us down. But we mustn’t forget that our Savior has resurrected from the dead. The tomb is empty! Jesus has conquered death and taken away its sting. Sin and death no longer have a stranglehold on our lives. God has conquered and for all men and women alike, there is hope in the resurrection.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13
