The Sunrise Offers a Chance to Start Over

Good afternoon! It’s April 3rd, 2021 and I’m almost done with my training for the Army National Guard. It all started back in November of last year. At times it was difficult and time never seemed to go by so slow. But it’s April now and it’s been a worthwhile experience. Through it all I’ve had the support and encouragement of family and friends and above all, the guidance and comfort from God. It hasn’t been easy, but knowing that God is with me has made it bearable. I don’t know where I would be without God. This morning’s sunrise was a reminder that God offers us the chance to start over no matter how dark our night may have been.

The Lord’s acts of mercy indeed do not end, For His compassions do not fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:22-23

There are countless benefits to being a believer in Christ. One of the biggest benefits for me, however, is knowing that I’m not alone. No matter how dark your night is, light comes in the morning. I’ve had enough experience to understand that we are imperfect beings. We tend to fall no matter how strong of an effort we place in being righteous humans. It’s in our nature to make mistakes. The Word even says that all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. I’m saying this because it’s okay to come to grips with our imperfection. Once we come to grips with the reality that we’re imperfect, we’ll be able to depend on the One whos is perfect.

for all [a]have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, – Romans 3:23

Our mistakes and sins have a tendency to weigh us down. They fill our hearts and minds with guilt and shame. Before we know it, we’re in a hole that seems inescapable. It reminds me of a WWE promo from a 2004 PPV event. The event was called “No Way Out” and various wrestlers would say in an ominous tone, “there will be no… way… out.” Sometimes our sins and mistakes make us feel like there is no way out. But the good news today is that there is. God offered an escape from our sinful lives more than 2,000 years ago. His name is Jesus Christ. The Bible says that if you believe in your heart and confess with your lips that Jesus Christ is Lord, you will be saved.

Sins make our world dark. It’ll drive us into a corner where our backs are against the wall and hopelessness enters our heart and mind. But again, there is hope. Jesus is the hope that our hearts desperately desire. We need to be optimistic. We have to be optimistic that there is an escape from our sins and mistakes. Like the ray of sun in the horizon that starts to drive out the darkness of the dark night, so is the love of God that shines light into our dark world. Take a moment to analyze the sunrise when you get a chance. Know that this is exactly how God’s love penetrates the darkest parts of our lives. No matter how dark your night may be, light comes in the morning. And the sunrise offers a chance to start over.

For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for a lifetime; Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning. – Psalm 30:5
