I Am Who God Says I Am

Revival in Christ, identity, true identity, identity in God, Christian blog

I don’t think I got a chance to write something about a thought I had a few weeks back. We were at our Bible study and my friend was talking about our purpose and he referenced Jeremiah 1:5. Before we go any further, here’s Jeremiah 1:5;

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

That first part is what caught my attention this time around. “Before I formed you in the belly, I knew you.” What is my identity? Am I Mexican, American, Canadian, Russian, etc.? Am I black, white, or brown? Am I poor or rich? What do I do for a living? What defines us? Is it our ethnicity, our place of birth, our economic status? A lot of times we can categorize ourselves and somehow we allow these categories to become our identity. Even before we had the ability to think for ourselves, people identified us. But what is my true identity?

Jeremiah 1:5 says that God already knew us before we were in our mother’s womb. Isn’t that amazing? God knew you and me before we were even born! This means, we had an identity before we even came into this world. Before people could start attaching labels to us, we already had an identity. So when you think about it, regardless of how you or others identify you, you’re true identity comes from God. God says you and I have a purpose. God says that you and I are so valuable that He decided to come down from heaven to die for our sins. God says that with Him all things are possible and that we are more than conquerors. God says we are children of the almighty living God.

You might have people that label you as a reject. There might be people that label you as a loser and that you’ll never accomplish anything in life. But that doesn’t matter. Because what matters is what God says you are. The fact that God knew us before we were in our mother’s womb should bring peace, strength, and joy to our lives, knowing that our true identity is found in God alone. Of course we can identify as male and female, black or white, etc. But when it comes to who we are as people, it’s always going to be found in God alone. He gives us our true identity.
