Exploring Secular Stories Through a Gospel Lens

I want to start by clarifying that when I share secular content, it’s not to promote it, but to explore how it might connect to the Christian faith. I understand that some Christians might disapprove of it, but living in this world means having hobbies and pastimes. Jesus is the foundation of my faith. The Gospel highlights themes like redemption and perseverance. These core themes have significantly helped me when I’ve faced adversity. That’s why I gravitate toward stories that reflect these themes. For example, CM Punk’s redemption arc in WWE can resonate and point us toward the Gospel.

CM Punk is a legend in professional wrestling. Many consider his 2011-2012 period to be the peak of his career. However, due to burnout, injuries, and frustrations with WWE, he stepped away from pro wrestling. He didn’t set foot inside a ring for over seven years until he joined AEW. After a rough run with the promotion, he returned to WWE nearly ten years later. Punk has always had an edgy persona. He became “the Voice of the Voiceless” by representing a disgruntled part of the fan base who felt overlooked. He’s 47 now, well past his prime, but today he finds himself in what is arguably one of the biggest moments of his career.

From Outsider to Icon: Why CM Punk’s Journey Transcends Wrestling

Why do I believe this moment goes beyond professional wrestling? Well, first of all, one of the main reasons I love pro wrestling is that it tells the timeless story of good versus evil. These are characters, though sometimes extensions of the real person behind them, using the ring as a canvas to portray a story. CM Punk was extremely popular in the early 2010s. He was never the corporate golden boy but rather an outsider who rose to prominence through hard work and determination. He was 35 when he stepped away from wrestling, just a couple of years after his prime. That meant there was room to build on his legacy. It didn’t go as planned, but never say never is a common saying in professional wrestling.

WrestleMania is the biggest event in WWE and all of professional wrestling. It is the equivalent of the Super Bowl, which means everyone desires the chance not only to perform on the show but also to main event it. That’s exactly the position CM Punk finds himself in as WrestleMania 42 approaches. He will be the official main event of the final match during the two-night event on Sunday, April 19, 2026. He faces what can be seen as a modern-day status quo in Roman Reigns. This scenario isn’t different for Punk. It’s the foundation of his character—challenging the status quo. It used to be John Cena or The Rock. But at WrestleMania 42, veteran CM Punk aims to remind fans why he calls himself “The Best in the World.”

A Story of Redemption and Unyielding Perseverance

This is redemption for CM Punk. His initial exit from WWE and from professional wrestling in general raised questions about his legacy. He was accomplished by this point, but the way he left, given what he stands for, just didn’t sit right with me. At 47, he’ll enter WrestleMania 42 as the World Heavyweight Champion, with another chance to topple a member of the status quo in the prestigious main event. He’s in the twilight of his career, but his activity level demonstrates a willingness to keep fighting. It’s a clear reflection of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Timeless Lessons from the Ring: Keep Going, Hope Endures

This is pro wrestling, and that’s what makes it so great when characters and stories come together to create timeless classics. Whether CM Punk can succeed at WrestleMania 42 remains to be seen. Regardless, he’s come a long way, and win or lose, it will cement his place in history. But if there’s one thing we can learn from his story, it’s that no matter the adversity we face or our age, we must keep going. Bad endings aren’t always the end of a story; they are just the conclusion of a chapter. Setbacks will happen, but that doesn’t mean hope is gone. There is always hope in Jesus, which is why I can find a way to connect this to our faith.

Faith in the Midst of Life’s Vastness: A Personal Reminder

In Hebrews 11:1, it says that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. I remember being atop San Cristóbal Castle in Puerto Rico several years ago, taking in the grandeur of the ocean. Sometimes we feel big and invincible, as if nothing can touch us. But standing there alone, watching the ocean’s endless waves, made me feel small and vulnerable. It was a stark reminder that I am small, but that God is bigger than the ocean I was looking at. I couldn’t see Him, but I knew that He was present. This is the faith that helps us persevere—knowing we are not alone in the midst of life’s troubles. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1.

Revival in Christ is my way of spreading the Gospel. Jesus saved me when I didn't have anything to offer Him. Even now, He still has mercy on me. The most I can do is live for Him and share Him with others.
